What's Happening?
Rakuten Viki, a prominent streaming service for Asian entertainment, has launched a new brand campaign titled "Viki Pass It On," featuring the global K-pop group LE SSERAFIM. The campaign aims to celebrate the passionate global fanbase driving the popularity
of Asian entertainment, including K-pop and Korean and Chinese dramas. As part of the initiative, LE SSERAFIM members—KIM CHAEWON, SAKURA, HUH YUNJIN, KAZUHA, and HONG EUNCHAE—have curated an exclusive watch list of their favorite Asian series for Viki subscribers. The campaign includes a video spot running on CTV, social media, and digital channels, created in partnership with the creative agency UNFOLD. This launch coincides with Viki's audience approaching 130 million registered users and follows the premiere of its original K-drama co-production, 'Dive into You,' with another co-production, 'The Painted Soul,' set to debut on October 21.
Why It's Important?
This campaign highlights the increasing global influence of Asian entertainment, particularly K-pop, and its significant impact on the U.S. entertainment market. By partnering with a globally recognized K-pop group like LE SSERAFIM, Rakuten Viki is strategically tapping into a dedicated and rapidly expanding fanbase, which can lead to increased subscriptions and viewership in the U.S. and other key markets. The initiative also underscores the growing trend of cross-cultural collaborations in the entertainment industry, where K-pop artists are not only musical acts but also cultural ambassadors and trendsetters. This collaboration can further solidify Asian entertainment's position in the mainstream U.S. media landscape, influencing consumer preferences and potentially opening doors for more diverse content offerings from streaming platforms. The curated watch list by LE SSERAFIM members also provides a direct connection between artists and fans, fostering community engagement and loyalty.
What's Next?
The "Viki Pass It On" campaign is expected to continue its rollout across various digital and social platforms in the U.S. and other global markets. Rakuten Viki will likely monitor the campaign's effectiveness in attracting new subscribers and engaging existing users, potentially leading to future collaborations with other prominent Asian entertainment figures. The platform's upcoming original content, such as 'The Painted Soul,' will also be a key focus, aiming to capitalize on the increased visibility generated by the LE SSERAFIM partnership. The success of this campaign could encourage other streaming services to invest further in Asian content and artist partnerships, potentially leading to a more diverse and globally integrated entertainment industry. LE SSERAFIM will also continue their 'PUREFLOW' world tour and release new music, maintaining their global presence.
Beyond the Headlines
The collaboration between Rakuten Viki and LE SSERAFIM reflects a broader cultural shift where K-pop and Asian entertainment are transcending niche markets to become significant global cultural phenomena. This partnership is not just about marketing; it's about validating and celebrating the passionate fan culture that has propelled Asian entertainment to international prominence. It highlights the power of fan communities in driving content consumption and shaping industry trends. Furthermore, the campaign subtly emphasizes the role of digital platforms in democratizing access to diverse cultural content, allowing fans worldwide to connect with artists and stories from different regions. This trend could lead to a more interconnected global entertainment ecosystem, where cultural exchange is facilitated through shared media experiences, potentially fostering greater understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures among U.S. audiences.
