What's Happening?
Naperville has once again been recognized as the top suburban retail sales generator in the Chicago metropolitan area, according to a report by Melaniphy & Associates. The city generated over $5.7 billion in retail sales in 2025, marking a 15.2% increase
from the previous year. This growth is attributed to Naperville's robust shopping centers, restaurant scene, automobile dealerships, and grocery stores. Despite the closure of some grocery stores, new establishments like 99 Ranch Market and MOM’s Organic Market are set to open, further bolstering the city's retail landscape. Additionally, Naperville leads in the restaurant and bar industry, with $592 million in sales, an 8.4% increase over 2024.
Why It's Important?
Naperville's continued dominance in retail sales underscores its economic vitality and attractiveness as a commercial hub. The city's ability to sustain and grow its retail sector, even amid economic uncertainties, highlights its strategic planning and strong consumer base. This success benefits local businesses and contributes to the city's overall economic health. The increase in retail sales also reflects broader consumer trends, such as a return to in-person shopping and increased spending in anticipation of tariffs. Naperville's performance sets a benchmark for other suburbs and reinforces its position as a key player in the regional economy.
What's Next?
With new grocery stores and major retailers like L.L.Bean and Brandy Melville expected to open, Naperville's retail sector is poised for further growth. The city's strategic location and affluent demographics continue to attract businesses, suggesting sustained economic expansion. The ongoing development of retail spaces and the introduction of new dining and entertainment options will likely enhance Naperville's appeal as a shopping destination. Stakeholders, including local government and business leaders, will need to manage this growth to maintain the city's economic momentum and address any challenges that arise.
