What's Happening?
WildBrain, a global leader in family entertainment, has announced a long-term strategic partnership with EightyEight Pictures, an animation and visual effects studio. This collaboration aims to strengthen premium CG animation production across WildBrain's
content slate. The partnership will integrate the creative leadership and filmmaking expertise of WildBrain and House of Cool with EightyEight Pictures' established CG production infrastructure, talent, and capacity. EightyEight Pictures, founded by Milind D. Shinde, has offices in Toronto and London, with production studios in Mumbai and Bangalore. Shinde previously helped establish DreamWorks Animation’s production operations in India and Oriental DreamWorks in Shanghai. This strategic move is part of WildBrain’s broader plan to evolve its production capabilities, creating a more integrated and flexible model for animated content. WildBrain's Vancouver studio is also planning a move to a new 47,000-square-foot facility in January 2027.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is significant for the animation industry as it addresses the growing demand for high-quality CG animation delivered with both creative excellence and production efficiency. By combining WildBrain's creative vision with EightyEight Pictures' production scale, the collaboration aims to expand the capacity for ambitious animated stories. This model allows WildBrain to maintain creative leadership while leveraging external expertise for execution, a common practice in the industry that this partnership aims to make more consistent and efficient. The move also highlights the increasing globalization of animation production, with studios in India playing a crucial role in delivering premium content. For consumers, this could mean a greater volume of high-quality animated series and films, as studios optimize their production pipelines to meet market demands.
What's Next?
Under this new partnership, WildBrain and House of Cool will continue to lead the creative vision and production oversight for their projects, while EightyEight Pictures will provide additional CG execution capacity within a shared pipeline. The companies plan to collaborate through shared workflows and integrated production pipelines to deliver premium CG animation at a greater scale. WildBrain's Vancouver studio relocation in January 2027 will further support its evolving production capabilities. This integrated model is expected to create new opportunities across the collective ecosystem of WildBrain, House of Cool, and EightyEight Pictures, allowing them to take on a broader slate of projects and respond to industry demand and client needs more effectively. The partnership is designed to ensure WildBrain maintains high standards for its premium projects while expanding its global reach.
Beyond the Headlines
This strategic alliance reflects a broader trend in the entertainment industry where major content creators are seeking to optimize production through global partnerships and integrated workflows. The involvement of EightyEight Pictures, with its roots in establishing DreamWorks' production operations in India and Shanghai, underscores the maturation and global distribution of animation talent and infrastructure. This model allows for cost efficiencies and access to diverse talent pools, which can be crucial for sustaining competitiveness in a rapidly evolving media landscape. The emphasis on 'premium CG animation' suggests a continued focus on high-quality visual storytelling, which is increasingly important for attracting and retaining audiences in a crowded streaming market. This collaboration could also set a precedent for how other major animation studios structure their production pipelines in the future, balancing in-house creative control with external production capabilities.
