What's Happening?
Netflix has announced the continuation of 'The Rest is Football' podcast, originally launched for the World Cup, into the next two Premier League seasons. The podcast, hosted by former BBC Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker, will release two episodes
weekly, on Mondays and Fridays. Despite not being a major ratings success, the podcast performed sufficiently well in the UK to justify its renewal. This move is part of Netflix's broader strategy to attract sports fans, as the company continues to invest in live sports rights and sports-related content. Netflix is also preparing for the 2027 Women's World Cup and is seen as a potential bidder for the U.S. rights to the 2030 and 2034 World Cups.
Why It's Important?
The continuation of 'The Rest is Football' podcast underscores Netflix's commitment to expanding its presence in the sports broadcasting arena. By investing in sports content, Netflix aims to diversify its offerings and capture a larger share of the sports fan market, which is traditionally dominated by cable networks. This strategy could potentially increase Netflix's subscriber base and enhance its competitive edge in the streaming industry. Additionally, securing rights to major sports events like the World Cup could significantly boost Netflix's viewership and revenue, positioning it as a formidable player in sports broadcasting.
What's Next?
As Netflix continues to expand its sports content, it is likely to pursue additional sports rights and partnerships. The company's interest in bidding for the U.S. rights to future World Cups suggests a strategic focus on high-profile international sports events. This could lead to increased competition with traditional sports broadcasters and other streaming platforms. Furthermore, Netflix's ongoing investment in sports content may prompt other streaming services to enhance their sports offerings, potentially reshaping the landscape of sports broadcasting.
