What's Happening?
American Tungsten & Antimony (ASX:AT4) has announced the acquisition of a constructed antimony refinery in Nevada and an associated mine in Arizona. This strategic move aims to establish a domestic supply chain for critical minerals in the United States.
The acquisition involves a share sale and purchase agreement with Nexus Metals, amounting to a total consideration of $3 million in cash and approximately 1.06 billion AT4 shares, options, and performance rights. The Del Sol refinery, which is part of the acquisition, is a permitted facility capable of processing up to 18,500 tonnes of feed annually, with plans to expand this capacity to 100,000 tonnes. The refinery has recently produced electrolytic antimony flake and is set to expand into producing higher value antimony products. The acquisition aligns with US defense industrial policy priorities, especially as China has imposed export controls on antimony and tungsten, which are critical for defense and semiconductor industries.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is significant as it addresses the strategic need for a domestic supply chain of critical minerals, which are essential for the US defense and semiconductor industries. The move comes in response to increasing export controls by China on these materials, which poses a risk to US national security and industrial capabilities. By establishing a vertically integrated supply chain within the US, AT4 aims to reduce dependency on foreign sources, particularly from countries like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea, from which the US Department of War is prohibited from procuring certain critical minerals starting January 2027. This development could enhance the resilience of the US industrial base and support the production of military specification antimony products on US soil.
What's Next?
The completion of the acquisition is contingent upon shareholder and regulatory approvals, as well as Nexus Metals exercising its option to acquire Del Sol Refining. AT4 plans to immediately begin scaling up antimony flake production and expanding the Del Sol facility to include ammonium paratungstate production. Additionally, laboratory-scale testwork on scheelite concentrate for tungsten processing development is set to commence. The company is also targeting a Nasdaq listing in the fourth quarter of 2026, which could provide further financial backing for its expansion plans.
