What's Happening?
The UEFA Champions Innovate program is heading to Madrid in 2027, launching a new challenge focused on improving fan mobility and travel for the UEFA Champions League final. In collaboration with Atleti Lab, the innovation engine of Atlético de Madrid,
the program seeks innovative solutions to help fans move and travel more easily, safely, and sustainably. This initiative, which debuted at the 2024 final in London and has continued with editions in Munich (2025) and Budapest (2026), aims to promote collaboration between innovators, UEFA, and the host city to ensure a lasting positive impact. The 2027 final will be held at Madrid's Estadio Metropolitano, and the challenge addresses the complexities of managing tens of thousands of local and international fans traveling through the city using various transport modes and services. The program is structured around three key areas: Anticipate, Optimise, and Adapt, to cover the entire fan mobility journey.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is crucial for enhancing the fan experience at major international sporting events, particularly the UEFA Champions League final, which attracts a massive global audience. By focusing on fan mobility, UEFA and Atlético de Madrid are addressing a significant operational challenge that impacts safety, sustainability, and overall enjoyment. The program's emphasis on data-informed decisions and innovative solutions can lead to more efficient crowd management, reduced environmental impact, and improved accessibility for all attendees. The collaboration with Atleti Lab highlights the growing trend of sports organizations leveraging technology and innovation to solve complex logistical problems. Successful solutions developed through this program could set new standards for event management, potentially being replicated at other major sporting events worldwide and leaving a positive legacy for the host city and its infrastructure.
What's Next?
The application period for innovators is open from October 30 to November 29, 2026. Following this, evaluation, selection, and innovator pre-onboarding will occur in December 2026. The pilot development phase will run from January to May 2027, during which chosen innovators will work with key stakeholders to develop and test their solutions. Two in-person workshops are scheduled for January 11 and March 23, 2027, in Madrid, with an online workshop on May 5, 2027. A showcase event will take place on June 3, 2027, in Madrid, two days before the Champions League final, where pilot project learnings will be presented. Innovators selected for the program will receive €25,000 in funding, exclusive access to experimental environments and relevant mobility datasets, and mentorship from experts at UEFA and Atlético de Madrid.
