What's Happening?
Alea Lovely, an artist, creative, writer, and astrologer in Kansas City, Missouri, has transformed her 1000-square-foot, two-bedroom apartment into a 'Zen space' that is both welcoming and elegant. Moving into the 102-year-old prewar building in Hyde
Park seven months ago, Lovely aimed to create a safe and healing environment for herself and her child. She utilized a color palette of neutrals, deep woods, mauves, chromes, blacks, and beiges in the living room, mixing woods with metals for a vintage Parisian-meets-contemporary aesthetic. The dining room was converted into a home office and painted 'Death by Chocolate' by Behr. Lovely emphasized enhancing the apartment's original architecture and incorporating biophilic design elements like wood, marble, linen, and florals to promote a sense of calm and well-being.
Why It's Important?
This initiative highlights a growing trend in urban living where individuals are prioritizing personal well-being and mental health through intentional home design. In a fast-paced world, creating a 'Zen space' within one's residence, particularly in a rental property, demonstrates the adaptability and creativity of renters to personalize their living environments for emotional and psychological benefits. The focus on biophilic design, which integrates natural elements, reflects an increasing awareness of the positive impact of nature on human health and stress reduction. This approach can inspire other renters and homeowners to consider how their living spaces can be optimized for comfort, tranquility, and personal expression, moving beyond mere aesthetics to foster a deeper sense of peace and sanctuary.
What's Next?
Lovely plans to continue refining her apartment's design, indicating an ongoing process of personalizing and optimizing her living space. This continuous evolution suggests that the concept of a 'Zen space' is not a static achievement but rather an evolving environment that adapts to personal needs and preferences. The detailed account of her design choices and the resources she utilized, including secondhand finds and specific paint colors, could serve as a practical guide for others looking to embark on similar home transformation projects. The emphasis on creating a supportive and cherished living environment is likely to resonate with many, potentially influencing future interior design trends towards more mindful and wellness-oriented approaches.
Beyond the Headlines
The creation of a 'Zen space' by Alea Lovely transcends simple interior decoration, touching upon deeper themes of self-care, healing, and intentional living. Her motivation to create a 'safe and healing space' after a challenging relationship underscores the therapeutic potential of one's home environment. This approach challenges the conventional view of rental properties as temporary or unalterable, demonstrating how personal agency can transform even leased spaces into deeply personal sanctuaries. The integration of her artistic and astrological practices into her home design further illustrates how personal philosophies and creative expressions can manifest in tangible ways, fostering an environment that supports holistic well-being and personal growth.
