What's Happening?
Les Mills recently concluded its 'Les Mills Live Barcelona' event, an international filming initiative held from October 10-11, bringing together 3,300 instructors and fitness enthusiasts from 100 countries. This event, hosted at the Fira de Barcelona –
Montjuïc, served as the company's official international masterclass filming location for the first time in Spain. During the event, eight new workout programs were recorded, including Bodypump, Bodycombat, Bodybalance, Les Mills Grit, Bodypump Heavy, Les Mills Core, Strength Development, and Bodyattack. These newly filmed workouts are slated for a global release across Les Mills' network of health clubs in early 2027. The event also marked a significant moment for the company as Jason Paris took over as CEO from Phillip Mills on October 6, with Phillip Mills transitioning to a founder and director role. This Barcelona event follows a series of major Les Mills Live events worldwide, such as the London event in October 2022, which utilized virtual reality for an immersive experience.
Why It's Important?
This international filming event underscores Les Mills' strategic commitment to live group exercise and its global expansion. By involving thousands of participants in the filming process, the company aims to capture the authentic energy and community spirit of live workouts, which it believes cannot be replicated online. This approach is crucial for maintaining engagement and motivation among fitness enthusiasts and instructors worldwide. The introduction of new programs, particularly the emphasis on strength training with 'Bodypump Heavy' and 'Strength Development,' reflects evolving fitness trends and consumer demand for diverse workout options. For health club operators globally, these new programs provide fresh content to attract and retain members, positioning group exercise as a dynamic blend of fitness, entertainment, and community building. The event also highlights the company's leadership transition, with a new CEO at the helm during a period of significant content generation and global rollout.
What's Next?
The newly filmed workout programs are scheduled for a global launch across Les Mills' network of over 22,600 health clubs in more than 100 countries in early 2027. This rollout will provide fresh content for the more than 100,000 certified instructors who deliver Les Mills programs. The company is expected to continue its strategy of developing international fitness festivals, building on its partnership with Adidas, which has already seen successful events in Berlin and Madrid in 2024, with further events planned for Cyprus, Athens, and Riyadh. This ongoing series of events and content releases will likely reinforce Les Mills' position in the global fitness industry, emphasizing the importance of social connections and shared exercise experiences in an increasingly digital world. The company will also likely focus on integrating these new programs into its existing offerings and marketing them to its extensive global network.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'Les Mills Live Barcelona' event signifies a broader trend in the fitness industry towards experiential and community-driven workouts, moving beyond traditional studio programming. By transforming a large exhibition venue into a production studio and involving participants directly in the filming, Les Mills is not just creating content but also fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose among its global community. This strategy taps into the psychological benefits of group exercise, such as increased motivation and social support, which are critical for long-term adherence to fitness routines. The company's investment in both live events and virtual reality experiences, as seen in the London 2022 event, indicates a hybrid approach to fitness delivery, catering to diverse consumer preferences and technological advancements. This blend of in-person and digital engagement could set a new standard for how fitness content is created, distributed, and consumed globally, emphasizing the value of collective fitness experiences in an increasingly individualized world.
