The Broadcast Positioning System (BPS), a new technology derived from the ATSC 3.0 standard, is gaining traction as a potential solution to the vulnerabilities of the Global Positioning System (GPS) in the U.S. GPS has become a critical utility for various
sectors, including energy, communications, and finance, but is susceptible to interference and jamming. Recent incidents, such as false airplane positions at Dallas-Fort Worth airport and disruptions in Denver, highlight these vulnerabilities. BPS offers an alternative by using broadcast signals to provide precise timing and location data, requiring minimal additional hardware. This technology is being developed by Merkhet Solutions, a company launched by the National Association of Broadcasters, and is currently undergoing testing in collaboration with Dominion Energy.
