What's Happening?
Leonardo's CRM4Defence project has been designated as one of 46 Strategic Projects by the European Commission under the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). This recognition is part of Leonardo's broader strategy and Transition Plan, aligning with the European Commission's
circularity targets. The project focuses on recycling titanium, aluminum, and magnesium from the Group's facilities, transforming manufacturing waste into secondary raw materials for reintroduction into Leonardo's production cycles. This circular economy model aims to reduce strategic dependence and enhance the resilience and competitiveness of the European aerospace and defense supply chain. Currently, a pilot phase for aluminum recycling is underway at Leonardo's sites in Cisterna di Latina, Venegono, and Nola.
Why It's Important?
The selection of CRM4Defence as a European strategic project is significant because it streamlines authorization procedures and facilitates access to funding instruments, accelerating the project's development. This initiative is projected to contribute to the production of up to 1,400 tons of secondary titanium, aluminum, and magnesium. Beyond material recovery, it is expected to reduce energy consumption and emissions within the supply chain compared to using primary metals. This aligns with Leonardo's goal of achieving 65% recovered material by 2030 and increasing recycled content in its products, bolstering Europe's self-sufficiency in critical raw materials for defense and aerospace sectors.
What's Next?
The initial phase of the CRM4Defence project is valued at approximately 23.5 million euros. Looking ahead to 2030, Leonardo plans to expand this model to its supplier network, encompassing foundries, workshops, SMEs, industrial partners, and joint ventures. This expansion is estimated to be worth around 150 million euros. The project's strategic designation will likely lead to further investment and collaboration across the European supply chain, fostering a more robust and sustainable approach to critical raw material management within the defense and aerospace industries.
Beyond the Headlines
This project highlights a growing trend towards circular economy principles within high-tech industries, particularly in sectors critical for national security like aerospace and defense. By transforming waste into valuable resources, CRM4Defence addresses not only environmental concerns but also geopolitical vulnerabilities related to raw material supply. The initiative could set a precedent for other industries to adopt similar closed-loop systems, reducing reliance on volatile global supply chains and promoting regional economic stability. It also underscores the increasing integration of sustainability goals with strategic industrial policy in the European Union.
