Researchers in China have developed a new type of superglue that can bond materials underwater within seconds and maintain its hold for years. This glue, made from a supramolecular ionic liquid mixed with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), forms a strong, water-resistant
bond by disrupting the thin water film on surfaces through Marangoni flow. The adhesive, named BP16TPB, demonstrated a bonding strength of 1.1 megapascals on ceramic after 10 seconds, increasing to 1.3 megapascals within five minutes. It can be reused multiple times without losing adhesion strength, making it a promising solution for marine applications.
