Pitt Community College (PCC) has been awarded a $427,415 grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education program. This funding is designated to address the increasing demand for quality control bioanalytical laboratory
technicians in eastern North Carolina. According to PCC Biotechnology Department Chair Christina Weeks, the three-year project will focus on enhancing the college’s Biotechnology Associate in Applied Science program. Key initiatives include expanding recruitment and retention efforts, purchasing industry-standard laboratory equipment, modernizing lab instruction, and strengthening partnerships with local industry. The goal is to produce more graduates prepared for the region's growing life sciences workforce.

The region's life sciences industry has surpassed 100,000 jobs, with the BioPharma Crescent, including Pitt County, being a significant hub for biopharma manufacturing.
