What's Happening?
Alpengirl Camp is actively recruiting Wilderness Trip Leaders, also known as Alpenguides, for its summer 2027 season, running from June 6 to August 11, 2027, based in Bozeman, Montana. The role combines the responsibilities of a summer camp counselor
with those of an outdoor guide, leading groups of approximately 10-12 participants on multi-day trips ranging from 6 to 14 days. Alpenguides will lead various outdoor activities, including multi-day backpacking trips, horse packing adventures, sea kayaking, and rafting, with technical activities led in conjunction with outside outfitters. Key responsibilities also include teaching outdoor skills, managing risks, navigating logistics, mentoring campers, fostering a supportive group culture, and ensuring the overall safety and well-being of participants. The position requires a balance of outdoor expertise and strong interpersonal skills to create memorable and positive experiences for young people.
Why It's Important?
This recruitment drive is crucial for Alpengirl Camp to deliver its outdoor adventure programs, which play a significant role in youth development. By providing opportunities for young people to engage in challenging outdoor activities, the camp helps foster confidence, resilience, and leadership skills. The emphasis on both outdoor guiding and counseling aspects highlights the holistic approach to youth mentorship, addressing not only physical challenges but also emotional and social growth. The demand for qualified leaders underscores the growing interest in experiential education and wilderness immersion programs for teenagers. The program also contributes to the local economy in Bozeman, Montana, by creating seasonal employment opportunities and supporting outdoor recreation businesses.
What's Next?
Alpengirl Camp will continue its recruitment and selection process for Alpenguides, with mandatory ten-day in-person staff training in Bozeman, MT, before the season begins. This training will cover essential skills such as camping, backpacking, camp cooking, first aid scenarios, risk management, and a review of camper files, permits, maps, and itineraries. Prospective leaders are expected to have Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification with Epinephrine Auto-injector certification, Adult CPR/AED certification, a valid driver's license, and previous experience leading overnight outdoor trips and working with youth. The camp aims to assemble a team of responsible, trustworthy role models who can balance safety, structure, spontaneity, and fun for the summer 2027 season.
Beyond the Headlines
The Alpengirl Camp program, and similar initiatives, address a broader societal need for youth engagement with nature and the development of practical life skills.
