What's Happening?
DeltaX, an artificial intelligence (AI) and energy solutions company, has successfully raised 32 billion won (approximately $23.8 million USD) in Series B funding. This capital infusion is earmarked for
the expansion of its battery energy storage system (BESS) production capabilities, both in South Korea and internationally. A significant portion of this expansion includes establishing a manufacturing base in Walton County, Georgia, in the United States. The company plans to invest $141 million in this U.S. facility, with construction slated to begin by the end of the current month and completion targeted for the first half of 2027. This Georgia plant is intended to cater to the demand from North American utilities, AI data centers, and commercial and industrial (C&I) ESS customers. DeltaX aims to achieve over 100 billion won in revenue by 2027, driven by its BESS projects in the U.S. and Japan.
Why It's Important?
This investment by DeltaX in a U.S. manufacturing facility signifies a growing trend of foreign direct investment in the American renewable energy and energy storage sectors. The establishment of a BESS production base in Georgia will contribute to the domestic supply chain for critical energy infrastructure, potentially reducing reliance on overseas manufacturing for these components. For the U.S. energy market, increased domestic production of BESS can enhance grid stability, facilitate the integration of more renewable energy sources, and support the energy demands of rapidly expanding AI data centers. This move also creates jobs and stimulates economic activity in Georgia. Furthermore, by targeting North American utilities and C&I customers, DeltaX is positioning itself to address the increasing need for reliable and efficient energy storage solutions across various sectors, which is crucial for the nation's energy transition and technological advancement.
What's Next?
DeltaX is preparing for the commencement of construction on its Georgia plant by the end of this month, with an anticipated completion in the first half of 2027. The company is also actively seeking a Series C funding round in the second half of this year to further finance its global production expansion, including additional investments in the U.S. An initial public offering (IPO) is being planned for the first half of 2028. Domestically, DeltaX will establish a production base in Uiryeong County, South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, with AI and ESS facilities expected by 2028. In Japan, DeltaX is collaborating with SoftBank on a BESS project for AI data centers, aiming for mass production in the second half of 2027. The company also intends to expand into India and Europe, exploring business models that involve providing production systems to local companies.
Beyond the Headlines
The expansion of DeltaX's BESS production capabilities, particularly in the U.S., highlights the increasing global demand for advanced energy storage solutions driven by the proliferation of renewable energy and the energy-intensive nature of artificial intelligence. The company's focus on integrating AI into its BESS technologies, such as developing proprietary battery management systems (BMS) and thermal management systems, suggests a future where energy infrastructure is not only efficient but also intelligently managed. The 'selective immersion' technology for battery abnormality detection demonstrates an emphasis on safety and reliability, critical factors for widespread adoption of BESS. This development also underscores the strategic importance of localized production for critical technologies, mitigating supply chain risks and fostering technological independence in key regions like North America.
