Como, an Italian top-flight football club, has announced a ban on headers in its youth academy to mitigate the risk of head injuries among young players. This decision positions Como as one of the pioneering clubs in implementing such measures. The club's
education board, which includes former United and Real defender Raphael Varane, emphasizes the importance of safeguarding children's health by minimizing head impacts during their developmental years. The ban applies to players up to the U11 level, where headers are completely prohibited, and corners are taken as low throw-ins. For players aged U12 and above, headers may be introduced gradually, starting with a light rubber ball, but are limited to once a month and a maximum of five headers per training session. Coaches are also instructed to minimize unnecessary heading exposure and avoid using overly inflated balls.
