What's Happening?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is significantly reshaping the retail landscape in the U.S., with approximately 49.6 million adults, or 19% of the population, now initiating their retail product research using AI tools. This shift has led 39 million consumers
to abandon traditional search methods. A PYMNTS Intelligence study indicates that 83% of consumers who use AI for retail research report at least one change to their purchasing decisions. Specifically, 43% found a better price, 27% opted for a different brand, and 26% purchased a different product. This trend also benefits smaller merchants and challenger brands, as AI recommendations have led 10.8 million consumers to try a new retailer or site, resulting in over $15.1 billion in AI-assisted spending for these new relationships. The report highlights that AI is becoming the primary gateway for shopping, influencing consumer choices from the initial research phase.
Why It's Important?
The integration of AI into the retail discovery process has profound implications for the U.S. economy and consumer behavior. For consumers, AI offers enhanced efficiency in finding better prices and discovering new products or brands, potentially leading to significant savings and broader market access. For businesses, particularly smaller merchants and challenger brands, AI provides an unprecedented opportunity to gain visibility and compete with larger established players, bypassing traditional advertising channels. This shift challenges the ad-supported discovery model, as AI often provides comparisons within its own responses, potentially reducing traffic to search engines and review sites that rely on page views and affiliate clicks. The estimated $2.2 billion in consumer price savings and $1.8 billion in gross merchandise value shifting towards smaller merchants underscore the economic impact of AI-driven retail.
What's Next?
As AI continues to evolve, its influence on retail is expected to deepen. The report suggests that visibility within AI-generated answers will become as crucial for merchants as placement in search results. This necessitates that product information be complete, current, and easily interpretable by AI systems, encompassing details like shipping speed, availability, warranty, and return policies. For AI companies, the focus will likely shift towards integrating trusted checkout connections and verified merchant information, as 61.7% of general AI users are open to completing purchases directly within an AI assistant. This indicates a potential future where AI platforms not only guide discovery but also facilitate the entire transaction, further disrupting traditional e-commerce models and creating new competitive landscapes.
Beyond the Headlines
The rise of AI in retail extends beyond mere transactional efficiency, touching upon deeper aspects of consumer trust and market dynamics. The ability of AI to reopen purchasing decisions, previously settled by habit, introduces a continuous 'fresh contest' for brands to earn a place on a consumer's shortlist. This could foster greater innovation and competition as brands strive to meet AI's criteria for recommendations. However, it also raises questions about the potential for algorithmic bias and the transparency of AI's recommendation processes. The report's finding that review publishers face significant challenges as AI summarizes their content without generating direct traffic highlights a broader shift in how information is consumed and valued in the digital age, potentially leading to new business models for content creators and aggregators.
