What's Happening?
Our Legacy, the Swedish fashion label founded by Jokum Hallin and Cristopher Nying in 2005, is set to open its largest store to date in Shanghai, China, this month. CEO Richardos Klarén announced this expansion, highlighting it as a significant step for
the brand. To navigate the Chinese market, Our Legacy is collaborating with Dongliang, a pioneering multi-brand concept store established in 2009. Dongliang, which operates 15 stores across China and various lifestyle concepts, will serve as Our Legacy’s operational partner. This partnership will see the new Shanghai store operate as a franchise business. Our Legacy has had a presence in China for over a decade, with its first wholesale account in 2015 and increased investment in relationships with local retailers like SKP, I.T, Lane Crawford, and Assemble since 2018. Klarén noted that China has evolved into a strategically important part of their business.
Why It's Important?
This strategic expansion into China by Our Legacy, facilitated by a partnership with Dongliang, underscores the growing importance of the Chinese market for international fashion brands. For Our Legacy, this move provides a significant opportunity to deepen its penetration into a lucrative market with a trusted local partner, mitigating some of the complexities and risks associated with international expansion. Dongliang, in turn, benefits by enhancing its international portfolio and leveraging Our Legacy's cult following. This collaboration model, where international brands partner with established local retailers, is crucial for navigating China's unique retail landscape, including consumer preferences, regulatory environment, and distribution networks. The success of this venture could serve as a blueprint for other Western brands looking to expand their footprint in China, demonstrating the value of localized expertise and established retail infrastructure.
What's Next?
The immediate next step is the opening of Our Legacy's largest store in Shanghai this month, marking a new phase of expansion for the brand. The partnership with Dongliang will focus on the operational aspects of this franchise business, aiming to leverage Dongliang's extensive retail network and market knowledge. Our Legacy will likely continue to build on its existing relationships with leading local retailers in China, further solidifying its presence. The brand's long-term strategy appears to involve continued investment and growth in the Chinese market, which CEO Richardos Klarén has identified as a 'meaningful and strategically important part of the business.' The performance of this new flagship store and the broader partnership with Dongliang will be closely watched as an indicator of future expansion and investment in the region.
Beyond the Headlines
The collaboration between Our Legacy and Dongliang highlights a broader trend in global retail: the necessity of strategic local partnerships for successful international market entry, particularly in complex markets like China. This approach goes beyond simple distribution agreements, involving a deeper integration of operational expertise and market insights. It also reflects the evolving nature of luxury and cult fashion brands, which are increasingly looking beyond traditional Western markets for growth. The emphasis on a franchise model with a local partner like Dongliang suggests a recognition of the cultural nuances and consumer behaviors that differ significantly from Western markets. This strategy allows Our Legacy to maintain brand identity while adapting to local tastes and operational realities, potentially setting a new standard for how fashion brands approach global expansion in the coming years.
