What's Happening?
Refactor Games, the developer behind the FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition on Netflix Games, has reportedly been shut down by its part-owner, Delphi Interactive. This closure comes shortly after the game's release in June 2026, which was praised by both
Netflix and Delphi Interactive for its performance. Despite the positive reception, Delphi Interactive pulled funding, leading to the layoff of the entire Refactor Games team. Former employees have confirmed the shutdown, citing a loss of funding as the primary reason. The studio, which included former developers from EA Sports and 2K Sports, had previously released Football Simulator in early access in 2022.
Why It's Important?
The closure of Refactor Games highlights a troubling trend in the gaming industry where studios are shut down despite successful game launches. This incident underscores the volatility and financial instability that can affect game developers, even when their products perform well in the market. The decision by Delphi Interactive to withdraw funding reflects broader challenges in securing long-term financial support for game development. This situation also raises concerns about the sustainability of partnerships between game developers and major platforms like Netflix, which are increasingly venturing into the gaming sector.
What's Next?
The immediate future for the laid-off employees of Refactor Games remains uncertain. While some hope to be rehired for other projects, the lack of severance packages adds to their financial insecurity. The gaming industry may see increased scrutiny over the stability of developer-platform relationships, especially as more entertainment companies like Netflix expand into gaming. Stakeholders may push for more transparent and secure funding agreements to prevent similar occurrences. Additionally, the industry might witness a shift towards more independent game development as studios seek to mitigate risks associated with external funding dependencies.
