What's Happening?
Orange County Music & Dance (OCMD), a nonprofit performing arts school in Irvine, California, has announced the acquisition of a second building to expand its resources and programs. The new 25,000-square-foot facility, located near the intersection of the 55
and 405 freeways, will double the school's instructional space to 50,000 square feet. This expansion is expected to increase enrollment by 400 students. The new Cowan Campus, situated close to the existing Fitch Campus, will feature multiple dance and rehearsal studios, music rehearsal rooms, a keyboard lab, and a music production studio. The expansion will support a range of programs from early childhood to adult arts education, including new offerings in world music and global sounds.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of OCMD is significant as it enhances access to arts education in Orange County, providing more opportunities for students of all ages to engage in music and dance. By increasing its capacity, OCMD can serve a larger community, fostering artistic talent and offering pre-professional training. This development aligns with the school's mission to nurture and empower youth through arts education, potentially inspiring future generations of artists. Additionally, the expansion supports the local economy by creating jobs and attracting families interested in arts education, contributing to the cultural enrichment of the region.
What's Next?
With the new facility, OCMD plans to introduce additional programs and resources, including early childhood music and dance programs, conservatory and pre-conservatory programs, and offerings for adults. The school also aims to enhance its community outreach through initiatives like Operation Gig, which supports U.S. military veterans. As OCMD settles into its expanded space, it will likely continue to seek partnerships and funding opportunities to sustain and grow its programs, ensuring long-term success and impact in the community.
