What's Happening?
The Gaza Cinema Academy officially launched at the Venice Film Festival, an initiative co-founded by Ezzaldeen Shalah and Mai Masri. The academy aims to provide film education, training, and production opportunities in Gaza, a region that has experienced
significant destruction and a severe humanitarian crisis since October 2023. The project has garnered support from a diverse group of Palestinian, Arab, and international filmmakers and industry figures, including Palestinian actor and director Hiam Abbas, American comedian Ramy Youssef, and Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, who also serves as a Venice jury member. Shalah emphasized that cinema in Gaza is not merely an art form but a means of preserving memory, reclaiming identity, and empowering a new generation to tell their stories. The academy seeks to create a platform for young people and women in Gaza to learn, create, and share their films with the world, inviting international partners to contribute to this endeavor. The launch event included a short film showcasing aspiring women filmmakers in Gaza.
