What's Happening?
Pennsylvania Highlands Community College has announced the selection of Jacob Buckley and Morgan Hamel as the founding leaders of its new Black Bear Student Marketing Agency. This initiative is part of the Penn Highlands’ Marketing AAS program, designed
to provide students with real-world marketing experience. Buckley will serve as the first Agency Director, overseeing projects that cover research, digital marketing, social media, branding, and content development for clients. Hamel has been appointed as the first Editor-in-Chief of the Black Bear Marketing Journal, an online publication that will offer practical marketing insights to individuals, entrepreneurs, and businesses in the college's service area. Both students are actively involved in shaping these new initiatives from their inception, gaining valuable leadership and project management skills.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of the Black Bear Student Marketing Agency and Journal is significant for several reasons. It provides a practical, hands-on learning environment for Marketing AAS students, bridging the gap between academic theory and professional practice. By working on real-world projects for clients, students like Buckley and Hamel gain invaluable experience that is directly applicable to future careers. This initiative also benefits local businesses and entrepreneurs by offering marketing services and insights, potentially fostering economic growth within the college's service area. The program aims to develop well-rounded marketing professionals who are not only skilled in various marketing disciplines but also possess strong leadership and project management capabilities, enhancing their employability and contribution to the U.S. business landscape.
What's Next?
Jacob Buckley and Morgan Hamel will continue to lead the inaugural year of the Black Bear Student Marketing Agency and Journal. Their immediate focus will be on developing the agency's projects and the journal's content, working with student teams and business partners. All Marketing AAS students at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College are eligible to participate in these initiatives, suggesting a continuous cycle of student involvement and project execution. The success of this initial phase will likely determine the future expansion and scope of the agency and journal, potentially attracting more clients and providing enhanced learning opportunities for subsequent cohorts of students. Hamel, who is pursuing dual studies in Business Management and Marketing, plans to transfer to a four-year institution to further her career in Entertainment Business, indicating the program's role in preparing students for diverse professional paths.
Beyond the Headlines
This initiative represents a broader trend in higher education to integrate experiential learning more deeply into curricula, particularly in vocational and applied fields like marketing. By creating an in-house agency, Pennsylvania Highlands Community College is not only educating students but also fostering a micro-economy of marketing services that can benefit the local community. This model could serve as a blueprint for other educational institutions looking to provide practical skills and leadership development. Furthermore, the Black Bear Marketing Journal offers students a platform for professional writing and digital publishing, skills that are increasingly vital in the modern marketing landscape. The program's emphasis on 'turning creative ideas into real-world results' and 'expanding horizons' highlights a forward-thinking approach to education that prioritizes innovation and practical application.
