What's Happening?
Federal Industry Minister Mélanie Joly announced a $6.7 million federal contribution to support two Canadian-led mining innovation projects. The funding aims to accelerate the development and adoption of technologies that enhance responsible resource
development and strengthen Canada's critical minerals supply chains. Oakville-based Novamera Inc. and Vancouver-based Koonkie Canada Inc. are the recipients of this funding. Novamera will use the funds to advance its surgical mining technology, which integrates advanced subsurface imaging, AI, robotics, and conventional drilling equipment. Koonkie will develop an AI-powered platform for ecological restoration and biodiversity monitoring at mine sites.
Why It's Important?
This federal investment underscores the importance of innovation in the mining sector, particularly in enhancing sustainability and precision. By supporting technologies that improve resource extraction and environmental monitoring, Canada is positioning itself as a leader in responsible mining practices. This funding not only aids in the commercialization and scaling of these technologies but also strengthens the country's critical mineral supply chains, which are vital for various industries. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to integrating advanced technologies in traditional sectors to boost economic growth and environmental stewardship.
