What's Happening?
Chesterfield County Public Schools' Food and Nutrition Services team is hosting a weekly event at the Chesterfield Farmers Market, offering a menu featuring locally sourced food. On August 5, the menu will include BBQ chicken drumsticks from Joyce Farms,
pasta salad with cherry tomatoes from Happy Dirt, corn on the cob from Parker Farms, applesauce from Kilmers Orchard, and fresh local milk from Richlands Dairy. The event aims to provide nutritious meals to children under 18 for free, while adults can purchase meals for $9. The initiative is part of the school's effort to promote healthy eating and support local agriculture.
Why It's Important?
This initiative highlights the importance of supporting local agriculture and providing access to healthy, nutritious meals for children. By sourcing ingredients from local farms, the program not only boosts the local economy but also ensures fresher, more sustainable food options. The free meal program for children under 18 addresses food insecurity and promotes healthy eating habits among young people. Additionally, the event fosters community engagement and awareness about the benefits of consuming locally produced food, which can lead to more sustainable food systems and healthier communities.
What's Next?
Chesterfield County Public Schools plans to continue its partnership with local farms and expand its offerings at the farmers market. Future events may include educational activities about nutrition and sustainable agriculture, as well as collaborations with local organizations to further support community health initiatives. The program's success could inspire similar initiatives in other school districts, promoting a broader movement towards sustainable and community-focused food systems.
