What's Happening?
Ben George, formerly an executive editor at Little, Brown, has been appointed as the executive editor at Pushkin Press US, effective July 1. In his new role, George will lead the development of a new U.S. list focusing on literary fiction and nonfiction.
He will collaborate closely with Pushkin's UK team on joint publications. George's previous experience includes acquiring and editing works by notable authors such as Adam Haslett and Leslie Jamison. His move to Pushkin Press follows his departure from Little, Brown due to a restructuring in 2024. George has also held editorial positions at Viking Penguin and literary magazines Tin House and Ecotone, where he co-founded Lookout Books.
Why It's Important?
Ben George's appointment is significant for Pushkin Press as it marks a strategic expansion into the U.S. market with a focus on literary works. His extensive experience and successful track record in acquiring and editing acclaimed authors could enhance Pushkin's reputation and influence in the American publishing industry. This move may also attract new authors and readers to Pushkin's offerings, potentially increasing its market share and visibility in the competitive U.S. literary scene. For the broader publishing industry, George's transition highlights ongoing shifts and opportunities within the sector, particularly for independent publishers seeking to expand their reach and impact.
What's Next?
As Ben George assumes his new role, the next steps will likely involve curating and launching the new U.S. literary list. This will include identifying and acquiring new titles that align with Pushkin's vision of literary excellence. The collaboration with the UK team suggests potential for cross-Atlantic publications, which could broaden the audience for selected works. Stakeholders in the publishing industry, including authors and literary agents, will be watching closely to see how Pushkin's U.S. expansion unfolds and what opportunities it may present for new and existing literary talents.
