What's Happening?
Instructure, a leading learning ecosystem and creator of Canvas LMS, has announced a collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to develop AI-powered tools aimed at expanding educational access for underserved communities globally. This initiative,
supported by the AWS Education Equity Initiative, focuses on overcoming the challenges faced by institutions using outdated, on-premise systems due to the high costs and complexities of migration. The project aims to make the transition to modern learning infrastructure more affordable and efficient. In its first year, Instructure plans to reach approximately 900,000 learners, including 280,000 from underserved communities, with a goal to expand to 5.4 million learners over four years.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration is significant as it addresses the digital divide in education, particularly for underserved communities that lack access to modern learning technologies. By facilitating the migration to cloud-based systems, Instructure and AWS aim to provide equitable educational opportunities, which can lead to improved career and life outcomes for learners. The initiative also supports workforce development by enhancing Canvas Career capabilities, which align educational programs with job market needs. This effort could potentially transform educational access and quality for millions, impacting workforce readiness and economic mobility.
What's Next?
Instructure plans to publicly report on the progress of this initiative starting in the second half of 2026, with updates on institutional adoption, learner reach, and workforce outcomes. The focus will initially be on regions like the United States, Brazil, Mexico, and the UK, with plans to expand further. The initiative will continue to evolve, aiming to address deeper structural barriers to education access and expand opportunities for learners worldwide.
