BHP's Jansen potash mine in Saskatchewan is employing a unique method to extract potash by freezing the ground to solidify waterlogged sand, allowing safe excavation. This technique, originally patented in 1884, involves drilling 89 holes and using chilled
brine to freeze the sand, which is then thawed gradually. The mine, which is 84% complete, aims to produce 4.15 million metric tons of potash annually by mid-2027. This project is significant as the U.S. relies heavily on potash imports, with 92% of its consumption coming from abroad, primarily from Canada.
