What's Happening?
Ohio State University has announced a new partnership with JPMorgan Chase, marking the first time the university's athletic teams will feature a jersey sponsor patch. The Chase logo will appear on the jerseys of all 36 men's and women's varsity sports
teams, starting with the football team's season opener against Ball State on September 5. This partnership is expected to generate approximately $17 million annually for Ohio State, a figure that surpasses many NBA jersey patch deals. The NCAA recently approved a rule change allowing Division I programs to display up to two commercial logos on their uniforms, with each logo limited to four square inches. In addition to the jersey patches, the deal includes expanded branding opportunities at Ohio Stadium and the Schottenstein Center, as well as new Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities for Ohio State athletes.
Why It's Important?
This partnership represents a significant shift in college sports, as universities increasingly adopt practices common in professional sports, such as corporate sponsorships on team uniforms. The deal with JPMorgan Chase not only provides substantial financial benefits to Ohio State but also enhances the university's ability to offer competitive NIL opportunities to its athletes. This move could set a precedent for other universities to follow, potentially leading to a broader acceptance of corporate sponsorships in college athletics. The financial influx from such deals can support athletic programs, improve facilities, and provide additional resources for student-athletes, thereby enhancing the overall competitiveness and appeal of college sports programs.
What's Next?
As the NCAA's rule change takes effect, more universities are likely to explore similar sponsorship opportunities, potentially leading to a wave of corporate partnerships across college sports. This trend could prompt discussions among stakeholders about the commercialization of college athletics and its impact on the traditional amateur status of student-athletes. Additionally, the success of Ohio State's partnership with JPMorgan Chase may encourage other financial institutions and corporations to seek similar deals, further integrating corporate branding into the college sports landscape.
