What's Happening?
The former Chillicothe paper mill site, previously operated by Pixelle Specialty Solutions, is set to welcome several new tenants, bringing significant economic revitalization to the southern Ohio community. The U.S. Paper Mill Company LLC, the current
owner, has announced plans to collaborate with Amphibian Aerospace Industries, Inc., U.S. Medical Glove Company, Aligned, and U.S. Box Company. This initiative is expected to involve an investment of approximately $1.5 billion. The new developments aim to replace the economic void left by the closure of the paper mill, which resulted in the loss of about 800 jobs. The new tenants are projected to create hundreds of jobs, including 150 permanent positions from the glove company and up to 200 direct jobs from the airplane manufacturer, along with over 500 indirect supply chain jobs.
Why It's Important?
This development is crucial for Chillicothe and the surrounding region as it promises to restore economic stability and job opportunities following the closure of the paper mill. The introduction of advanced manufacturing and technology infrastructure, including a high-performance computing campus, positions the area as a strategic hub for artificial intelligence and next-generation technology jobs. This shift not only addresses immediate employment needs but also aligns with broader economic trends towards technology and manufacturing sectors. The project could serve as a catalyst for further industrial growth in the region, potentially attracting more businesses and investments.
What's Next?
The next steps involve the construction and operational setup of the new facilities, with ongoing discussions about environmental management, particularly concerning the underground chemical plume left by the previous paper mill operations. The Chillicothe Chamber of Commerce is optimistic about the community's acceptance of the data center and other facilities, which are expected to utilize residential land rather than farmland. Long-term, there is potential for a manufacturing boom in the area, with aspirations to revive paper production through the manufacturing of paper boxes for the medical gloves produced on-site.
