What's Happening?
ElectricNOW, the free AVOD and FAST streaming service from Electric Entertainment, has finalized a licensing agreement with American Cinema Inspires (ACI). This deal adds over 40 feature films, totaling approximately 75 hours of content, to ElectricNOW's
library. The agreement grants ElectricNOW domestic AVOD, FAST, and YouTube streaming rights for the acquired catalog. Notable titles in this new package include the animated feature "The Ten Commandments," which features voice work from Ben Kingsley, Christian Slater, Elliott Gould, and Alfred Molina. Other additions are the drama "Like Dandelion Dust" starring Mira Sorvino, "Egg" with Alysia Reiner, Christina Hendricks, and Anna Camp, the comedy-drama "Miss Arizona" featuring Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Missi Pyle, and Steve Guttenberg, "Of Mind and Music" starring Bill Cobbs, Ruth Negga, and Andre Royo, and "Daisy Winters" with Iwan Rheon and Brooke Shields. Steve Saltman, Head of Domestic Sales at Electric Entertainment, and Chevonne O’Shaughnessy of ACI negotiated the deal.
Why It's Important?
This licensing agreement is significant for ElectricNOW as it substantially expands its offering of family-friendly programming, a key focus for the platform. By acquiring a diverse range of films, including animated features and dramas with well-known actors, ElectricNOW aims to attract and retain a broader audience seeking accessible, high-quality content. For American Cinema Inspires, this partnership with ElectricNOW provides a wider reach for their content within the U.S., making their programs available to more viewers for free. This move reflects a growing trend in the streaming industry where platforms are continuously seeking to differentiate themselves through content acquisition, particularly in niche or underserved markets like family co-viewing. The inclusion of films with established talent like Ben Kingsley can also boost the platform's credibility and appeal, potentially increasing viewership and engagement in the competitive streaming landscape.
What's Next?
Following this agreement, ElectricNOW will integrate the newly acquired 75 hours of content into its streaming platform, making it available to domestic audiences via AVOD, FAST, and YouTube. The focus will likely be on promoting these new family-friendly titles to attract new subscribers and engage existing ones. ElectricNOW's Head of Domestic Sales, Steve Saltman, expressed a desire for a continuing partnership with American Cinema Inspires, suggesting that further content acquisitions from ACI could be on the horizon. This expansion could lead to increased viewership metrics for ElectricNOW, potentially influencing future content strategy and investment in similar programming. The success of these new titles will also provide valuable data on audience preferences for family-oriented content within the free streaming model.
Beyond the Headlines
This deal highlights the evolving dynamics of content distribution in the streaming era, particularly the rise of AVOD (Advertising-Video On Demand) and FAST (Free Ad-supported Streaming TV) services. As subscription fatigue grows, free, ad-supported platforms like ElectricNOW are becoming increasingly viable alternatives for consumers. The emphasis on 'family co-viewing' content also points to a strategic effort to capture a demographic that values shared entertainment experiences, potentially fostering brand loyalty among households. The involvement of established actors in animated features, such as Ben Kingsley in "The Ten Commandments," underscores the continued appeal of celebrity voices in attracting audiences to animated content, regardless of the distribution model. This trend could further democratize access to a wide array of films, shifting the landscape of how and where audiences consume media.
