What's Happening?
Korean Air has expanded its participation in the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's International Remote Baggage Screening (IRBS) program to include flights from Seoul Incheon International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport and Seattle-Tacoma
International Airport. This program, already in place for flights to Atlanta, allows passengers to check their baggage once at the origin airport, with images reviewed remotely by CBP personnel before the aircraft lands in the U.S. Cleared bags are transferred directly to connecting flights, reducing the need for passengers to re-check their luggage. Delta Air Lines, a joint venture partner with Korean Air, also participates in this program on flights to Detroit and Minneapolis.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of the IRBS program to additional routes is significant as it streamlines the baggage handling process for international travelers, potentially reducing missed connections due to baggage re-check delays. This initiative enhances passenger convenience and efficiency at U.S. airports, aligning with broader efforts to improve international travel experiences. The program's success could lead to further adoption across more routes and airlines, benefiting the aviation industry by reducing operational bottlenecks and improving customer satisfaction.
