What's Happening?
James Gunn has offered an update on the 'Waller' series, starring Viola Davis, within the DC Universe (DCU). Gunn revealed on 'The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? The Official Podcast' that while he has plans for Amanda Waller if Viola Davis wishes to continue,
the series has not yet been greenlit. He explained that the show was 'strongly developing' but 'didn’t get to where it wanted to be.' Although not ruled out, 'Waller' is no longer a primary development priority for DC Studios, which is currently focusing on other projects. The series was initially announced as part of the DCU's shared universe plans, intended to follow the events of 'Peacemaker' Season 1, where Amanda Waller's operations were exposed by her daughter, Leota Adebayo. Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo, subsequently took over Waller's role as director of A.R.G.U.S.
Why It's Important?
This update clarifies the development status of a key DCU project and signals a potential shift in the franchise's immediate priorities. The 'Waller' series was anticipated to explore the consequences of Amanda Waller's exposed operations and her future within the DCU, making its stalled development significant for the overarching narrative. The fact that Rick Flag Sr. has taken over as director of A.R.G.U.S. in 'Peacemaker' Season 2 indicates that Waller's influence and role within the DCU are already evolving, regardless of her solo series. This decision impacts the character arcs of both Waller and Flag Sr., and potentially other characters connected to A.R.G.U.S. It also highlights the strategic choices DC Studios is making in prioritizing certain projects to build its new shared universe, potentially affecting the timeline for other announced or rumored productions.
What's Next?
While the 'Waller' series is not currently a priority for DC Studios and lacks a production schedule or release date, James Gunn has confirmed that Viola Davis's Amanda Waller remains a part of the new DCU, alongside characters like King Shark and Weasel. Her character's future is not dependent on the solo series moving forward, suggesting that Waller will continue to appear in other DCU projects. The shift of Rick Flag Sr. into the director role at A.R.G.U.S. opens up new narrative possibilities for both characters. Future DCU films and series will likely explore Waller's next moves and her continued influence, even without her dedicated show. The focus on other projects by DC Studios means that fans will need to await further announcements regarding the greenlighting and development of the 'Waller' series.
Beyond the Headlines
The fluctuating status of the 'Waller' series reflects the inherent complexities and strategic adjustments involved in launching and managing a large-scale cinematic universe. The decision to put a project on hold, even one featuring a prominent character and acclaimed actress like Viola Davis, underscores the need for creative alignment and strategic prioritization within a franchise. This situation also highlights the dynamic nature of storytelling in shared universes, where character roles and organizational structures can shift based on broader narrative needs and development challenges. The exposure of Amanda Waller's operations and her subsequent replacement by Rick Flag Sr. could signify a deliberate move to explore themes of accountability, power shifts, and the consequences of clandestine activities within the DCU, regardless of whether her solo series proceeds.
