What's Happening?
Michael Caine, at 93 years old, has announced his involvement in narrating an audiobook version of The Odyssey, produced by AI company ElevenLabs. This project marks ElevenLabs' first 'cinematic multicast audiobook,' featuring a reproduction of Caine's
voice alongside a full cast performance, original music, and immersive sound design, all created using AI technology. This audiobook is distinct from Christopher Nolan's upcoming film adaptation of The Odyssey, which stars Matt Damon and Tom Holland. Caine, who retired from acting three years ago, expressed his pleasure in being part of this innovative retelling of the classic epic. ElevenLabs has also acquired the rights to other celebrity voices, including the late Stan Lee, for similar projects.
Why It's Important?
The use of AI in creating audiobooks and other media content represents a significant shift in the entertainment industry. By utilizing AI to reproduce the voices of well-known figures, companies like ElevenLabs can continue to produce content featuring these celebrities even after they have retired or passed away. This development raises questions about the future of voice acting and the ethical implications of using AI-generated voices. It also highlights the potential for AI to revolutionize the way stories are told, offering new ways to engage audiences with classic tales like The Odyssey. The project could set a precedent for future collaborations between AI technology and the entertainment industry.
