What's Happening?
American Tungsten & Antimony (ASX:AT4) has contracted Metso Finland, an international engineering firm, to conduct a concept study for an ammonium paratungstate (APT) production circuit at its Del Sol
Refinery in Nevada, U.S. The study, known as front end loading 1 (FEL1), will assess a proposed initial capacity of 2,500 tonnes per annum (tpa) of APT, with potential for a modular expansion to 5,000 tpa. Instead of building a new greenfield tungsten plant, Metso will explore integrating the APT circuit into the existing, permitted Del Sol hydrometallurgical facility. This approach aims to leverage existing infrastructure, potentially reducing capital requirements and accelerating the timeline for domestic tungsten production. CEO Casper Adson emphasized that rebuilding domestic processing capabilities is a matter of national interest, given the U.S.'s reliance on offshore supply for critical minerals. Executive Chairman Timothy Morrison noted that the technical and cost data from Metso will support ongoing discussions with government agencies and funding partners, advancing Del Sol's goal of becoming a multi-commodity sovereign metals refinery to enhance America's critical minerals independence.
