What's Happening?
Albany Engineered Composites (AEC), a segment of Albany International Corp., has announced a significant expansion of its capabilities in hypersonic, solid rocket motor, and space applications. This expansion is facilitated through AEC Advanced Programs,
Inc. (AEC-AP), a wholly owned subsidiary established in 2021. Albany has invested over $36 million in dedicated facilities, equipment, and independent research and development (IRAD) to build vertically integrated manufacturing capabilities for advanced composite thermal protection systems (TPS) and other high-temperature, extreme-environment hardware. The AEC-AP facility, approximately 70,000 square feet, is located in Rochester, New Hampshire, and is designed to support full-scale production of carbon-carbon composites. This investment is further bolstered by a $21.2 million, 30-month U.S. government Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment (IBAS) contract awarded in September, aimed at advancing carbon-carbon composite TPS for hypersonic vehicles and solid rocket motors.
Why It's Important?
This expansion is crucial for the U.S. defense and space industries, as it directly addresses the growing demand for advanced materials capable of withstanding extreme conditions in hypersonic and space applications. The development of vertically integrated manufacturing capabilities for carbon-carbon composites enhances the domestic supply chain for critical components, reducing reliance on foreign sources and strengthening national security. The IBAS contract signifies the U.S. government's commitment to investing in and sustaining a robust industrial base for these advanced technologies. Furthermore, the teaming agreement with Lockheed Martin to pursue scalable production of next-generation U.S. hypersonic systems, including glide body applications, positions AEC as a key player in the future of American aerospace and defense. This initiative will create jobs, foster technological innovation, and ensure the U.S. maintains a competitive edge in advanced aerospace manufacturing.
What's Next?
AEC Advanced Programs will continue to develop and scale its manufacturing capabilities at the Rochester, New Hampshire facility. The $21.2 million IBAS contract will directly support the advancement of carbon-carbon composite TPS for hypersonic vehicles and solid rocket motors over the next 30 months. The collaboration with Lockheed Martin will focus on achieving scalable production for next-generation hypersonic systems. As program requirements and production volumes increase, the facility's purpose-built equipment and planned densification, machining, and inspection capabilities will enable further expansion. The company aims to transition hypersonic, solid rocket motor, and space technologies into full-scale production, leveraging its near net shape 3D-woven technology and associated design and simulation capabilities. This ongoing development will be critical for meeting future demands in both military and commercial aerospace sectors.
