What's Happening?
Guardian Metal Resources has entered into a strategic partnership with the Montana Mining Association to advance a tungsten mining and recovery pilot program in the United States. This collaboration aims to support domestic defense applications by utilizing
stockpiled legacy ore from the Tempiute Tungsten Project in Nevada. The initial shipment of 250-400 tonnes of ore is expected to be transported to Philipsburg, Montana, for trial processing by late summer 2026. The partnership also involves Montana Technological University and the Army Research Laboratory, highlighting the strategic importance of developing a domestic supply chain for tungsten, a critical metal for national security and industrial applications.
Why It's Important?
The partnership between Guardian Metal Resources and the Montana Mining Association is significant as it addresses the critical need for a domestic supply of tungsten, a metal essential for defense and industrial applications. Currently, the United States lacks active tungsten mines, with China controlling over 80% of global production. Establishing a domestic supply chain for tungsten is crucial for reducing reliance on foreign sources and enhancing national security. This initiative could potentially lead to the revitalization of the US tungsten mining industry, providing economic benefits and job opportunities in the mining sector.
What's Next?
Following the completion of metallurgical test work, the first shipments of ore are scheduled for late summer 2026. The success of the pilot program could lead to further shipments and expanded processing capabilities. Guardian Metal Resources is also planning to update the resource estimate for the Tempiute Project and aims to bring it back into production by 2028. The company is exploring commercial opportunities for its Pilot Mountain Project, which could further strengthen its position in the tungsten market.
