SpaceX's Starlink initiative to enhance its satellite internet service with gigabit speeds is encountering opposition from Iridium, a rival satellite communications provider. Iridium has formally complained to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC),
alleging that Starlink's proposed new 'gateway' stations risk causing significant radio interference. According to a letter sent by Iridium's attorney to the FCC, their simulations indicate that the Starlink gateways closest to Iridium's own facilities would generate interference levels far exceeding permissible limits. Iridium is urging the FCC to prevent SpaceX from utilizing specific radio spectrum bands, namely 19.4 to 19.6 GHz and 29.1 to 29.3 GHz, for 28 related gateway applications. These gateway facilities are essential for transmitting data to orbiting satellites, which then relay it to user devices. SpaceX currently operates over 100 gateway sites in the U.S., comprising more than 1,500 antennas. The company plans to launch next-generation V3 satellites and construct new gateway facilities to support gigabit speeds, which would utilize a broader range of radio frequencies.
