What's Happening?
The state of Maryland has finalized a deal to purchase the intellectual property rights of the Preakness Stakes from 1/ST Racing for $85 million. This acquisition follows the state's previous purchase of two racetracks from the company and marks a significant
step in Maryland's control over its racing operations. The deal was made possible after Maryland exercised its right of first refusal, matching an offer from Churchill Downs Inc. The state plans to use bonds issued by the Maryland Economic Development Corp. to fund the purchase, with the Maryland Jockey Club paying off these bonds over 30 years.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of the Preakness Stakes' intellectual property is crucial for Maryland as it ensures the state's continued prominence in the Triple Crown series. The Preakness Stakes is a significant cultural and economic event for Maryland, drawing national attention and tourism. By securing the rights, Maryland can maintain control over the branding and future of the race, which is vital for the local economy and the state's historical legacy in horse racing. This move also reflects a broader strategy to consolidate and enhance Maryland's racing infrastructure, including the redevelopment of Pimlico Race Course.
What's Next?
With the acquisition complete, Maryland will focus on the ongoing redevelopment of Pimlico Race Course, which is expected to host the Preakness Stakes next year with temporary infrastructure. The state aims to complete the venue by 2028, ensuring a modern facility for future races. Additionally, Maryland will work closely with local business communities to promote the Preakness on a national stage. The state will also manage the financial obligations of the bond payments, which will total approximately $200 million over 30 years.
