What's Happening?
Mostly Cloudy, an electronic music party series in San Francisco, has gained a loyal following by celebrating Black electronic music genres such as ghetto tech, Miami bass, Brazilian baile funk, and Chicago house. Founded by Julia Avila, also known as QUEENIE,
the party series began in 2024 and has grown through social media promotion. Avila, a third-generation San Franciscan, was inspired by her experiences in Brazil and aims to create a space for diverse music and attendees. Mostly Cloudy events attract hundreds of young party-goers to venues across San Francisco.
Why It's Important?
Mostly Cloudy's success highlights the increasing demand for diverse and inclusive music events that celebrate underrepresented genres and cultures. By providing a platform for Black electronic music, the party series challenges the mainstream music scene and promotes cultural exchange. It also demonstrates the power of social media in building communities and promoting niche music events. As Mostly Cloudy continues to grow, it could inspire similar initiatives in other cities, contributing to a more diverse and vibrant music scene.
What's Next?
As Mostly Cloudy expands, Julia Avila plans to establish a talent agency to represent DJs who play similar music, further supporting the growth of diverse electronic music. The next Mostly Cloudy party is scheduled for July 25 at Monarch in San Francisco, featuring a lineup of DJs. The continued success of the party series could lead to more collaborations with international artists and increased recognition for Black electronic music in the U.S. music industry.
