The 250,000-dwt ore carrier Shandong Hexie, owned by China's Shandong Shipping, has been awarded the world's first Solar Photovoltaic System class certificate by the China Classification Society (CCS). This certification signifies the successful integration
of a photovoltaic power-generation system utilizing three-phase micro-inversion technology. This system is projected to reduce annual fuel consumption by 33 tonnes and carbon emissions by 102.8 tonnes. The vessel, delivered in 2014, operates scheduled iron ore voyages between China and Port Hedland, Australia. Its design, by China Ship Design & Research Center Co., Ltd., was the first 250,000-dwt ore carrier independently designed, built, and classed in China. The certification is part of a broader efficiency program for the vessel, which also includes a high-voltage shore-power system approved by CCS, enabling zero-emission operations during port calls. The Shandong Hexie was also selected as a national-level shore-power demonstration project.
