What's Happening?
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is making progress on trade, artificial intelligence (AI), and economic resilience in preparation for the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Shenzhen, China. According to APEC Secretariat Executive Director Eduardo
Pedrosa, discussions throughout the year have focused on digital transformation, supply chain resilience, energy security, and food systems. AI is expected to be a prominent topic during the leaders' meeting on November 19, building on previous discussions about productivity, innovation, and emerging technologies. APEC economies have explored various AI governance approaches, including data privacy, trust, and technical standards, and have examined AI applications in energy, services, and trade, alongside efforts to enhance digital literacy and workforce development.
Why It's Important?
This advancement in trade and AI cooperation is critical for the Asia-Pacific region, which is navigating economic uncertainty and rapid technological change. The region's economy is projected to grow by 3.4 percent in 2026, but inflation is also expected to rise. Embracing AI is seen as a key driver for economic benefits, making digital readiness and capacity building essential for broader participation in the digital economy. Efforts to digitalize trade documents, which could reduce transaction costs by 5.8 percent, will enhance trade facilitation and regional economic integration. Addressing digital infrastructure financing, financial inclusion, energy systems, and food systems resilience provides a stable foundation for sustained cooperation and prosperity across the 21 member economies.
What's Next?
The APEC Economic Leaders’ Week will commence on November 14 with meetings involving senior officials and business representatives, culminating in the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting on November 19. During this week, leaders will further discuss and potentially formalize agreements on AI governance, trade digitalization, and other economic priorities. The outcomes of these discussions are expected to shape policy frameworks and collaborative initiatives for the coming year. Continued efforts will focus on strengthening digital literacy and workforce development to ensure that all member economies can benefit from technological advancements. The long-term goal, as stated by Pedrosa, is to ensure the prosperity of all people and future generations in the region.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate economic and technological discussions, APEC's focus on AI and digital transformation reflects a broader global shift towards a data-driven economy. The emphasis on AI governance, including data privacy and ethical considerations, highlights the growing awareness of the societal implications of advanced technologies. This proactive approach aims to prevent potential negative consequences while harnessing AI's benefits. Furthermore, the discussions on a Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP) through policy dialogues on trade digitalization, competition policy, state-owned enterprises, and trade and labor indicate a long-term vision for deeper regional economic integration. This comprehensive strategy aims to create a more interconnected, resilient, and equitable economic community in the Asia-Pacific.
