What's Happening?
UH Maui College is hosting the final session of its free cybersecurity webinar series, featuring FBI Special Agent J. Lewis. The webinar, titled 'FBI Honolulu Computer Analysis Response Team (CART) Overview,' is scheduled for November 18, from 12–1 p.m.
HST. Special Agent Lewis will provide insights into the FBI Honolulu Division’s CART team, detailing their methods for imaging, extracting, and preserving digital evidence. This session is specifically designed for sole proprietors and registered businesses across Hawaiʻi, aiming to enhance their understanding of digital forensics and cybercrime threats. The webinar series is part of a broader initiative funded by a $1 million grant from Google’s Cybersecurity Clinics Fund, establishing University of Hawaiʻi Cybersecurity Clinics as one of 15 new clinics nationwide.
Why It's Important?
This cybersecurity webinar is crucial for Hawaiʻi's business community, particularly small businesses and sole proprietors, who are often vulnerable targets for cybercrime. The FBI's involvement underscores the severity of digital threats and the importance of proactive defense. By providing direct insights from the FBI's Computer Analysis Response Team, the webinar equips local businesses with critical knowledge about how digital evidence is handled and preserved, which can be vital in the event of a cyberattack. This initiative, supported by Google, highlights a growing national effort to bolster cybersecurity defenses at the local level, recognizing that a strong cybersecurity posture is essential for economic stability and national security. For Hawaiʻi, where many businesses operate with limited IT resources, such educational opportunities are invaluable for protecting sensitive data and maintaining operational integrity.
What's Next?
The conclusion of this cybersecurity webinar series marks a significant step in enhancing digital resilience for Hawaiʻi's businesses. While this specific series ends, the establishment of the University of Hawaiʻi Cybersecurity Clinics, funded by Google, suggests ongoing efforts to provide resources and training. Future initiatives may include more advanced workshops, direct consultation services for businesses, and collaborative projects with local law enforcement to combat cybercrime. The insights shared by FBI Special Agent J. Lewis could prompt businesses to review and strengthen their current cybersecurity protocols, potentially leading to increased investment in security software, employee training, and incident response planning. This foundational education is expected to foster a more cyber-aware business environment, encouraging a proactive approach to digital security across the state.
