What's Happening?
Belmond's Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is set to introduce a new annual overnight journey from Paris to Monte Carlo, Monaco, starting May 10, 2027. This marks the first time Monaco will be included in the luxury train's itinerary. The journey will trace
the Côte d’Azur, passing through scenic locations like the Massif de l’Estérel, Saint-Raphaël, Cannes, and Nice, before arriving at Monaco-Monte-Carlo station and continuing to Venice. Fares for this inaugural Paris-to-Monaco journey will begin at €4,870 per person, based on two sharing a Historic Cabin. The expansion holds historical significance, as the train's revival in 1982 was initiated by Belmond founder James B. Sherwood's purchase of Art Deco sleeping cars at a Monte Carlo auction in 1977, making this new route a homecoming 50 years in the making.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of a new luxury rail route to Monaco by the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express signifies a continued and expanding demand for high-end, experiential travel. This development caters to affluent consumers seeking unique and historically rich travel experiences, reinforcing the trend of luxury lifestyle escapes. For the U.S. market, this expansion offers another exclusive travel option for high-net-worth individuals and luxury travel enthusiasts, potentially influencing travel agencies and tour operators specializing in premium European itineraries. The emphasis on Art Deco heritage and personalized service aligns with a broader consumer desire for authenticity and bespoke experiences in the luxury sector. This move also highlights the resilience and adaptability of luxury brands in creating new offerings that blend historical allure with modern comfort, attracting a discerning clientele willing to invest in memorable journeys.
What's Next?
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express will establish the Paris-to-Monaco route as an annual departure following its inaugural journey on May 10, 2027. This new offering will join Belmond's existing 'Villeggiatura by Train' series, which pairs train travel with stays at Belmond hotels in Italy. Future developments may include further expansion of luxury rail itineraries to other exclusive destinations, catering to the growing demand for unique and immersive travel experiences.
