What's Happening?
The Atlanta Dream, the WNBA franchise, has announced a multi-year agreement to relocate all of its home games to State Farm Arena, beginning with the 2027 season. This move signifies a significant expansion for the team, which has experienced substantial
growth in fan demand and season ticket memberships. Over the past three seasons, the Dream has consistently sold out every game at its previous venue, Gateway Center Arena. Furthermore, the team has sold out State Farm Arena eight times during that period, drawing crowds exceeding 17,000 fans. Under new ownership for the last five years, the franchise has seen a more than 400% increase in season ticket members, with ticket buyers now spanning all 50 states. The expanded 2027 WNBA season will feature 50 regular season games per team, meaning the Dream will host 25 home games at the larger State Farm Arena.
Why It's Important?
This relocation is a clear indicator of the surging popularity of women's basketball and the WNBA in the United States. The Atlanta Dream's ability to consistently sell out smaller venues and frequently fill a larger NBA arena demonstrates a significant and growing fan base. This move will allow the franchise to accommodate thousands more fans, offering a wider range of ticket options and premium experiences, which can further boost revenue and engagement. For the city of Atlanta, hosting all Dream games at State Farm Arena, a prominent downtown venue, elevates the visibility of women's sports and contributes to the city's vibrant sports and entertainment landscape. The increased capacity and central location could attract more diverse audiences and solidify the Dream's position as a major sports entity in the Southeast, impacting local businesses and tourism.
What's Next?
Fans can now secure season tickets for the 2027 season by placing deposits through the Atlanta Dream's official website. Two deposit options are available: a $27 deposit for lower bowl seating and a $100 deposit for Dream Elite Premium Memberships, which offer seats in the first three rows, premium hospitality, club access, and elevated food and beverage options. While the complete game schedule and exact dates for the 2027 WNBA season have not yet been released, the team plans to intentionally design the State Farm Arena game-day experience to maintain the intimate atmosphere and fan engagement that characterized their time at Gateway Center Arena. The transition to a larger venue is expected to further amplify the team's presence and impact within the league and the broader sports community.
Beyond the Headlines
The Atlanta Dream's move to State Farm Arena reflects a broader trend of increasing investment and recognition in women's professional sports. The substantial growth in season ticket memberships and consistent sellouts highlight a shift in consumer interest and a growing demand for high-quality women's athletic events. This development could encourage other WNBA franchises and women's sports leagues to pursue similar venue upgrades and expansion strategies, further professionalizing and commercializing women's sports. The emphasis on preserving the 'intimacy, traditions and fan engagement' in a larger venue also underscores the importance of community and fan experience in building a loyal following, a lesson that extends beyond sports into various entertainment and business sectors. This growth also signals a positive cultural shift towards greater appreciation and support for female athletes.
