What's Happening?
Iowa Workforce Development has announced a new grant program, Advanced Manufacturing Pathways Development (AMP’D Iowa), aimed at tackling skilled labor shortages in the state's advanced manufacturing sector. The initiative is supported by a $4.7 million
grant from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Industry-Driven Skills Training Fund. The program will focus on employer-led training in areas such as production and machine maintenance. Applications for the grant will open on June 29, with priority given to small and medium-sized employers. Iowa State University’s Center for Industrial Research and Service will assist in assessing workforce needs and identifying training priorities.
Why It's Important?
The manufacturing sector is crucial to Iowa's economy, being the second-largest employment sector and contributing significantly to the state's GDP. With job growth in this sector projected to outpace the national average, addressing the skills gap is vital for maintaining competitiveness. The AMP’D Iowa initiative not only aims to upskill the workforce but also to strengthen the talent pipeline, thereby enhancing productivity and economic growth. This initiative is expected to create more opportunities for Iowans in well-paying careers, supporting the state's economic development goals.
What's Next?
The grant application process will begin on June 29, and an informational webinar is scheduled for June 23. As the program rolls out, it is anticipated that more employers will engage in developing targeted training programs. The success of this initiative could lead to further investments in workforce development and potentially inspire similar programs in other states facing similar challenges.
