What's Happening?
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has launched India's first Wind Turbine Supply Chain Management Portal, WT-MARUT, during the Global Wind Day Conference in Goa. This initiative aims to strengthen domestic wind manufacturing, enhance supply chain transparency,
and support India's ambitious wind energy goals. The portal will facilitate component sourcing, supplier discovery, and industry collaboration, while also improving export readiness. This launch comes as India records significant growth in its wind sector, with a record 6.1 GW of new wind capacity added in FY 2025-26, making it the fourth-largest wind energy market globally.
Why It's Important?
The launch of the WT-MARUT portal is a significant step towards achieving India's renewable energy targets, particularly in wind energy. By enhancing domestic manufacturing capabilities and supply chain efficiency, India aims to become a major player in the global wind energy market. This initiative supports the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat by fostering a resilient domestic supply chain ecosystem. The portal is expected to boost India's competitiveness in global markets, potentially capturing a significant share of wind turbine exports by 2040. This development is crucial for India's energy transition and sustainability goals.
What's Next?
India plans to achieve 100 GW of wind installations by 2030 and 155 GW by 2035. The WT-MARUT portal will play a key role in reaching these targets by improving supply chain visibility and boosting domestic manufacturing. Industry stakeholders project that India will require over 100 GW of wind capacity by 2030 to support a sustainable energy transition. The country is well-positioned to scale annual wind installations and capture a significant share of the global wind supply chain opportunity by 2040.
