What's Happening?
A data analyst from Game Oracle has found that the use of AI in game development on Steam can lead to a significant reduction in the number of reviews a game receives, by approximately 53%. Additionally, the reviews that games with AI receive tend to be more
negative. The study analyzed 9,879 games released between January and October 2025, finding that 17.9% disclosed AI use. Games without AI disclosures generally received more reviews and higher ratings. The stigma associated with AI use appears to be more pronounced for larger developers, impacting their review counts and overall reception.
Why It's Important?
The findings highlight a significant challenge for game developers considering the integration of AI technologies. The negative perception of AI use can impact a game's success, particularly for high-potential games from established developers. This stigma could deter developers from utilizing AI, despite its potential benefits in game development. The study suggests that while AI can be a valuable tool, its use must be carefully managed to avoid negative consumer perceptions. This has implications for the gaming industry, as developers must balance innovation with consumer expectations and perceptions.
What's Next?
As the gaming industry continues to evolve, developers may need to adopt more transparent practices regarding AI use to mitigate negative perceptions. This could involve clearer disclosures and demonstrations of how AI enhances gameplay rather than detracts from it. Industry leaders and stakeholders may also need to engage in discussions about the ethical use of AI in gaming to address consumer concerns. The ongoing debate about AI's role in game development is likely to influence future industry standards and practices.
