What's Happening?
Stord, a rapidly growing e-commerce logistics provider, has completed its largest acquisition to date by purchasing AMS Fulfillment. While the financial terms were not disclosed, Stord indicated the sales price was in the nine-figure range. This acquisition adds
10 warehouses, totaling nearly 1.3 million square feet of storage, packing, and shipping space across Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and Philadelphia, to Stord's network. This expansion brings Stord's global footprint to over 100 owned and partner locations. AMS Fulfillment specializes in processing online orders for more than 150 beauty, wellness, and direct-to-consumer brands, offering services such as order management, warehouse and inventory management, reverse logistics, and value-added omnichannel fulfillment, including kitting, displays, and personalization. Stord aims to leverage AMS's customer base and operational capabilities, particularly as it enters the peak season, to enhance its scale, intelligence, and market momentum.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is significant as it strengthens Stord's position in the competitive e-commerce fulfillment market, where it aims to challenge larger players like Amazon. By integrating AMS Fulfillment's extensive operations and client portfolio, Stord can offer enhanced inventory management, speed, and reliability to a broader range of brands, including small-to-medium enterprises and larger brands with high-frequency orders. The addition of AMS's facilities, particularly those with automated bin sorting systems, complements Stord's investments in robotics and artificial intelligence. This move allows Stord to expand its physical infrastructure and leverage a growing dataset to train AI models on live fulfillment data across its nearly 100 facilities, potentially making its network smarter, faster, and more cost-effective. The increased scale and technological integration are crucial for meeting the escalating demands of e-commerce, especially during peak seasons, and for providing independent brands with the infrastructure to compete effectively on convenience and cost.
What's Next?
Following the acquisition, AMS Fulfillment's customers are expected to benefit from Stord's expanded scale and advanced technology, which should lead to improved inventory management, faster processing, and enhanced reliability. Stord plans to integrate AMS's operations into its existing network, further leveraging its recent investments in robotics and artificial intelligence. The company, which has secured $650 million in equity and credit capacity this year, will continue to expand its fulfillment network and accelerate technological advancements. This acquisition, Stord's eleventh, follows a series of strategic purchases, including Pitney Bowes' e-commerce fulfillment business, Ware2Go from UPS, Penny Black, and Shipwire from Ceva Logistics. These integrations are aimed at solidifying Stord's role as a comprehensive logistics provider capable of reaching a significant portion of U.S. households with timely deliveries, particularly as the e-commerce sector continues its rapid growth.
