What's Happening?
ASICS and the University of Michigan have officially opened the AMSI Lab, their first industry-academia research and development laboratory, located on the university's Ann Arbor campus. This new lab is part of the broader ASICS Michigan Sport Innovation
Center (AMSI), a joint research program established in December. The AMSI Lab aims to bridge the gap between university research and real-world sport innovation and product development. It combines ASICS' Human Centric Science approach and product expertise with the University of Michigan's multidisciplinary strengths in science, engineering, and design. Researchers from the university will collaborate with ASICS scientists, product developers, and athletes to prototype, test, and refine new technologies and product concepts for running performance, footwear, and apparel. The collaboration involves a $25 million commitment from ASICS and is supported by ASICS Institute of Sport Science America LLC (ISS America), ASICS' first U.S. research entity, which connects with ASICS' global R&D network.
Why It's Important?
This partnership signifies a significant investment in sports science and innovation within the U.S., potentially leading to advancements in athletic performance and product design. By integrating academic research with industry application, the AMSI Lab could accelerate the development of cutting-edge running footwear, apparel, and performance technologies. This initiative benefits both ASICS, by providing access to diverse academic expertise and a direct pipeline for innovation, and the University of Michigan, by offering its researchers real-world challenges and opportunities to apply their findings. The focus on human-centric science and athlete feedback ensures that the innovations are practical and beneficial for runners of all levels. The establishment of ISS America also strengthens the U.S.'s role in global sports research and development, fostering a dynamic ecosystem for scientific discovery and product creation.
What's Next?
The AMSI Lab will immediately begin projects with six faculty members, covering areas such as biomechanics, materials science, robotics, design, computer vision, and athlete preferences. These projects will explore concepts like 3D fabrics, elastic energy loops for efficient running, bio-inspired designs for specialized terrain, and kirigami-based shoe structures. Athletes will provide real-world feedback throughout the research process, helping to evaluate prototypes outside the laboratory. Findings from the AMSI Lab are expected to inform new ASICS running and performance products by 2028, with additional concepts and applications developing over time. This ongoing collaboration is anticipated to create a continuous cycle of academic discovery, experimentation, and product innovation, shaping the future of sports technology.
Beyond the Headlines
The collaboration between ASICS and the University of Michigan highlights a growing trend of industry-academia partnerships aimed at accelerating innovation and addressing complex challenges. This model not only provides companies with access to advanced research and talent but also offers academic institutions opportunities for practical application of their work and funding for further studies. Ethically, the focus on 'Human Centric Science' suggests a commitment to developing products that genuinely enhance human movement and well-being, rather than solely focusing on commercial gains. This partnership could also influence educational curricula, inspiring future generations of scientists and engineers to pursue careers in sports technology and related fields. The long-term impact could extend beyond product development, potentially contributing to a deeper understanding of human biomechanics and performance, with broader implications for health and fitness.
