What's Happening?
Buxton Resources (ASX:BUX) has reported significant findings of high-grade copper and silver at its newly acquired Arivaca Project in Arizona, US. Rock chip samples from the project returned values up to 6.21% copper (Cu) and 1,355 grams per tonne silver (Ag).
The Australian explorer secured 14.2 square kilometers of tenure in Arizona’s Laramide porphyry belt for approximately US$11,000 in pegging costs. The project is strategically located 30 kilometers southwest of Freeport-McMoRan’s (NYSE:FCX) Sierrita copper-molybdenum mining complex. Initial reconnaissance sampling yielded multiple high-grade results, with the best copper samples from historic mine dumps and several samples exceeding 400 g/t Ag. CEO Marty Moloney emphasized that Arivaca represents the kind of low-cost, high-grade opportunity Buxton seeks in underexplored settings within proven mineral belts.
Why It's Important?
This discovery by Buxton Resources is important for the U.S. mining sector, particularly in Arizona, a state known for its rich copper deposits. The identification of high-grade copper and silver at the Arivaca Project could contribute to the domestic supply of critical minerals, reducing reliance on foreign sources. For U.S. industries, a robust domestic supply of copper is vital for infrastructure development, renewable energy technologies, and electric vehicle manufacturing. The low acquisition cost and high-grade surface mineralization suggest a potentially economically viable project, which could attract further investment and development in the region. This could lead to job creation and economic growth in Arizona, while also enhancing the U.S.'s strategic mineral independence. The proximity to an existing major mining complex like Sierrita also suggests favorable infrastructure and potential for future synergies.
What's Next?
Buxton Resources has submitted geological field operations plans to the Arizona State Lands Department (ASLD) for detailed mapping and surface sampling, airborne magnetics, and drill testing. The company aims to determine if the historic workings and high-grade surface mineralization are indicative of a more extensive porphyry mineralized system at depth. The next steps will involve executing these planned exploration activities to further delineate the resource and assess its full potential. The company will continue to pursue 100%-owned opportunities acquired at low cost with high-grade surface mineralization in underexplored settings. Successful exploration could lead to resource definition and, eventually, the development of a new mining operation in Arizona.
Beyond the Headlines
The discovery at the Arivaca Project highlights the ongoing potential for significant mineral finds in historically mined but underexplored regions within the U.S. It underscores the importance of modern exploration techniques in re-evaluating areas previously overlooked or deemed uneconomical. The polymetallic veining, geochemical signature, and alteration observed are consistent with the upper parts of a porphyry system, suggesting the possibility of a much larger, deeper deposit. This could trigger renewed interest in similar geological settings across the American Southwest, potentially leading to a resurgence in domestic mineral exploration. Furthermore, the strategic acquisition of critical mineral assets like copper and silver aligns with broader national security and economic goals to strengthen domestic supply chains and reduce vulnerability to global market disruptions, especially for materials vital to advanced technologies and defense.
