What's Happening?
Premier Boxing Champions (PBC), led by Al Haymon, has become a consistent supplier of fights and fighters for DAZN since their alliance was formally announced in July. This partnership has enabled DAZN to fulfill its 'fight-a-week' pledge, significantly
enhancing its boxing content. Previously, the boxing world was characterized by promoters hoarding talent, leading to delays in major fights. However, the new alliance, which also includes Bob Arum’s Top Rank, Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing, and Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions, aims to overcome these historical divisions. Tom Brown, head of PBC’s TGB Promotions, stated that this collaboration provides PBC fighters with more opportunities to compete, acknowledging the short career window in boxing. The PBC influence has been particularly notable during the summer and fall months, contributing significantly to DAZN's schedule.
Why It's Important?
This alliance is crucial for the boxing industry, which has historically suffered from promotional rivalries that prevented major fights from happening. By bringing together previously competing promotions under the DAZN platform, the partnership aims to deliver more frequent and higher-quality matchups for fans. For DAZN, this collaboration strengthens its position as a global leader in sports streaming, particularly in boxing, by ensuring a steady flow of premium content. For U.S. boxing fans, it means greater access to a wider array of fights involving top talent from various promotions, potentially revitalizing interest in the sport. The increased activity also benefits fighters by providing more opportunities for competition and earning potential, addressing concerns about their limited career span.
What's Next?
The 'honeymoon phase' of this alliance is expected to continue, with PBC and other promotions working together to schedule more cross-promoted bouts. Upcoming events include a December pay-per-view in Phoenix featuring David Benavidez and a match between Keith Thurman and Vergil Ortiz Jnr, with five promoters represented on the card. Another significant bout will pit Erislandy Lara against Tim Tszyu in Australia. While the initial collaboration has been successful, some industry officials anticipate potential resistance in fight-making from managers, fighters, and promoters in certain cases. The long-term success of this model will depend on the continued willingness of all parties to prioritize fan interest and competitive matchups over individual promotional interests, ensuring a consistent delivery of compelling boxing events.
Beyond the Headlines
The formation of this broad alliance on DAZN represents a significant shift in the business model of professional boxing. It challenges the traditional 'sides of the street' mentality that has often hindered the sport's growth and popularity. By centralizing content on a single streaming platform, it could lead to a more unified and accessible boxing landscape. However, the underlying commercial interests of individual promoters and fighters remain, and the challenge will be to maintain this collaborative spirit in the long run. This model could serve as a blueprint for other fragmented sports to consolidate their offerings, potentially leading to a more streamlined and fan-friendly experience across various athletic competitions. The success of this venture could also influence how media rights are negotiated and distributed in the future, favoring platforms that can aggregate diverse content.
